Where to connect with other dog owners in the HRM!
|
Facebook is an amazing source of connecting with local people - and there's been a few groups that have popped up that I've found of local dog owners there - everybody always needs more friends! So my Facebook profile is at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=592875545 and

I had an email from Krystle about one particular Facebook group and it's called "Pug Pals of the HRM" - I tell you - Pug owners LOVE to get together! This group is trying to get together on Sunday, and as of my writing this update has EIGHTY members! Can you believe that! So if you have a pug, and you want to meet other pug owners - you should go join this group! Thanks to Krystle for forming this group! They have proved to be SO popular that they've also started their own website - at http://www.pugpals.ca/ - and there's also a website for the pugs of Nova Scotia at - http://www.novascotiapugs.com/
I've listed other Facebook groups at the bottom of the page as well that you might be interested in!
Puppy Socialization Classes!! I've had some emails wondering if there's any local puppy socialization classes - and YES there is! Lietash has puppy socialization classes that are very popular. Adina MacRae, who owns the company Sublime Canine offers a program called "Perfect puppies" that will show you how to start out on the right road with your new companion so that you'll have a long and happy life together. And finally, an employee at Carnegy Animal Hospital offers counselling to new puppy owners. Her name is Wendy Corkum and she's the "Canine Counselor" - she can be contacted through the vet hospital at 457-1575. As well - Christine Graham, who works at the Dartmouth Veterinary Hospital also teaches puppy socialization classes - she has a webpage at http://www.dartmouthvet.com/obedience.htm that you can check out!
There's been a lot of local message boards popping up lately and I thought I'd list the ones that I've learned about in case you haven't heard of them because some of them are really interesting - they all have sections that have to do with animals and one of them is specifically for dogs - so you should DEFINITELY go check that one out!
Who knew that there's a local Craiglist! It's at http://halifax.craigslist.org/ and lists basically everything you'd ever want in a message board or online listing - and you can post anything as well - and you can do it locally or nationally. It's got everything - you've just got to find it!
Apartment hunters with dogs have just gotten a new resource - you can now go to http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=174045523302&index=1#!/board.php?uid=53430741051 and search through postings for apartments that other people have posted or make your posting - networking is the key to finding dog-friendly apartments and this site is going to be super-helpful. Thanks Angela!!!!!
Here's some more Facebook groups I've found over the years - if you know of any local ones - email me at dogkisser@gmail.com -
There's also a very active local great dane community! Who knew? They also have a Facebook group that they access and get together through - at http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5504798302 - and they meet up for socials locally - I bet that's a sight to see!! I'd like to see the pugs and the great danes get together - now THAT would be something to see! Facebook Groups of local dog businesses or Groups - Healthy Hound Grooming out in Tantallon Chewed Slipper Doggy Day Care in Lower Sackville Global Pet Foods in Halifax and Dartmouth Ditto's Canine Learning Centre Sabrina Thurlow Pet Photography Advocates for Responsible Pet Ownership in Nova Scotia I want to help the SPCANS Metro Shelter
There's a Yahoo group called "Wannaplaypets" that's a meeting place for pet owners in the HRM. The owner is hoping to have regular meetings of members with their pets and members kids to play - and for members to also discuss any behaviour problems that they're having and to just talk about any kind of pet related problems with other local pet owners - not just dog owners but any kind of pets - fish, cat, reptile - whatever! It's also a place if you want to give away pets too or are looking for pets - local rescue groups are also represented as members (people like me - who can hook you up if you're looking to make sure that your companion animal makes it into as fantastic a home as it's been used to)
Another Yahoo group that's super for local dog owners is "NSDogs" - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NSDogs/ - it stays pretty steady around 250 members.
And if you're of the purebred dog variety - there's "Maritime Show Dogs" - they're a very active Yahoo group - they're at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/maritime-show-dogs/
The newest one to pop up is for Cape Breton dog owners and it's at http://maritimedogs.com/phpBB2/index.php - it's part of a huge new website called "Maritime Dogs" which aims to service dogs throughout the Atlantic provinces and has a section for each area.
There's another new message board called Hfx4Sale at http://www.hfx4sale.com/index.php - which is pretty self-explanatory. You can go look for animal related items in the different categories and pick on people trying to give away/sell their lifetime canine companions
And then there's the old standards - the Google Groups. There's http://groups-beta.google.com/group/hfx.forsale - and http://groups-beta.google.com/group/hfx.general - which are 2 local usenet groups that have been around for years. There are always conversations on there about animal issues - and they're often heated, and quite often some of the individuals can use some education! haha!!! That's what I think anyway!
Meetup.com has a listing for a meeting for local dog lovers - the 2nd Sunday of the month. You can go check it out for further information at http://activedogs.meetup.com/17/ There are also several breed specific meet up groups as well - if you search under http://www.meetup.com/cities/ca/ns/halifax/ - it will come up with a lot of Halifax specific ones like a "pug" meet up group and a "bullmastiff" meet up group - among others!
Kijiji is also a good place to go and get heated up - they've got a local Pets and Animals discussion board - it's at http://forum.kijiji.ca/viewforum.php?f=623

Charlie loves Halifax has been on the internet since May of 2002 and has had over 1,000,000 hits from local dog lovers since then. It is a site maintained completely and solely by one (1) person and her dogs completely and utterly for her own pleasure and her personal beliefs about how she would like the Halifax Regional Municipality to become more dog friendly, and what she believes to be a lovely view of what the world is, and how what it can become. If you agree with her view of this dog-centric world - that is super-fant-abulous. If you don't - that is too bad, but that is your opinion - just as everything on this website is - the opinion and beliefs of one person. If you believe them to be anything more than that - you have been mis-informed and have given me an importance anyone would lust after, but I certainly do not covet. Thanks for reading....
